It's Bengt Lissegård's Aseveliketju (freely translated: Brother in Arms Chain) from 1964 in Keskuskoulu park. It's a memoir of Norwegian and Swede volunteers who fought for Finland during the Winter War in 1939-40.

The Bench

I enjoy some unique details in town. This is one of my favourite front doors. It is actually an entrance to a dentist's office.

The Art Box

There are grey boxes all over town filled with cables and whatever. Some of them have been painted with floating subjects. This one is near a bus stop at Ruokasenkatu with consistent theme. I like these small details that makes everyday life a bit exciting and more colourful.

Two Rowans

You can tell that the fall is coming. These two rowans were carrying red berries. It reminds me that soon all landscape will change it's colour.

These two trees are in front of a hotel that I've passed many times and I wondered why I never noticed them before.

I've been told by elderly that the rowan doesn't carry two burden. It means that if it has a lot of berries at fall it won't snow a lot at winter.

Monument

This is a monument from the Cemetery II by professor Ensio Seppänen. It's a memorial for those who were moved to Sweden and died there in 1944-1946. During the war in Lapland 56 500 civilian refugees were transported to Sweden. Altogether 75 % of the population in Lapland were evacuated to other parts in Finland and to Sweden.

There is a scripture from the Bible: "Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations (Psalm 90:1.)".

I'm not much of a religious person but I do like statues and monuments and I'm also into the Holy Bible quotations - all that you can find in cemeteries.

Town Hall

This is the town hall building and was designed by world famous architect Alvar Aalto. This square is one of my favourite spots in Rovaniemi. The square is surrounded by the town hall, public library and theater house that are all Aalto's work of art.

The Church

This is the main church and one of the most famous sights in town. It's Evangelical Lutheran church and was built in 1950 designed by architect Bertel Liljequist. First church in Rovaniemi was built back in the 16th century but were destroyed over time. There are also 11 chapels among the main church in congregation of Rovaniemi.

The Beach Tree

Yes, there's also a proper beach in our small town. It's a popular place to spend any sunny and warm summer day. I added a picture of a tree that exists on the beach. There's no reasonable story about it but I thought it was a nice pic.

The Old Bridge

So, this is the first picture while it's been two years after I created this blog! I'll promise to be more active in the future.

It is the old bridge of Rovaniemi, also known as Ounaskoski Bridge. It has a history of rebuilding after it was destroyed by German during the war in 1944. If you look at left side of the picture you'll be able to see another one of Rovaniemi's bridges.
